After a successful inaugural campaign, the Steveston Hockey Club had to make some changes going into their second season to keep up with demand.
Last season, the non-profit Club fielded six teams and had 65 kids, this season the club has 250 kids and 18 teams.
The Club was founded by Al and Carol Wozney in 2007 because they wanted to give Richmond hockey players a chance to play spring hockey close to home.
“We thought that there’s a huge interest in spring hockey and that comes out of our experience with our kids playing on the Vipers,” says Al Wozney.
With more participants this year, the Club had to adapt to accommodate every player. This year, there will be eight tournament teams, one for each birth year between 2002 and 1996 and an under-10 girls team. Those teams will play three tournaments while having a game, a practice and a skill development session each week.
The remaining teams will be 3-on-3 teams and will have a game and a skill development session each week.
Besides the amount of ice time allotted to players, another draw is the price. The fee for a player on a tournament team is $650 while for a player on a 3-on-3 team it’s $450. “Part of our mission and motto is to keep it affordable for everybody,” says Wozney. The Club starts play April 1 and runs until mid-July.
