The Peewee A2 team got off to exactly the kind of start it wanted in the first round of the playoffs with a convincing 15-1 win over Vancouver Thunderbirds A2.
Both teams steered clear of the penalty box, with only three minors between them. But BWC is clearly out to prove that its not just the little brother to the A1 team. The squad finished the season 4-10-4 in Tier 1, but won the final game of league play 4-2 against Mission A1 and hopes to keep building steam through the playoffs.
The tilt was a massive mismatch going in, with the Thunderbirds facing nearly impossible odds after finishing the regular season at the bottom of Tier 4, with only two wins all season. BWC likely won’t be able to enjoy such a large margin of victory in the next round.
The A3 team, meanwhile, are in for a much tougher tilt this week. The club played its last league game on January 5, but will be thrown into the fire in a single-game elimination match against Squamish A1.
“They’re a couple of Tiers below us, but they scored 93 goals in 18 games,” said head coach, Aldo Bruno. “They won their last game 7-0, so they’re coming in on a high. They’ve got everything to gain and nothing to lose.”
The Peewee team has been trying to stay fresh with exhibition games, but the boys know they’ll need to set the tone early in order to derail Squamish’s high-octane attack. |
