Defenceman Derrick Pouliot (first overall 2009 Bantam Draft pick of the Portland Winter Hawks) scored twice to lead the Moose Jaw AAA Warriors to a 4-0 win over the Valley West Hawks in the Elite division final at the 29th Annual Richmond International Midget Tournament.
That was just the beginning of a whirlwind couple of days for Pouliot who played his first career WHL game with the Portland Winterhawks two nights later.
The Warriors opened the tournament with a 4-2 loss to the Seattle Jr. Admirals U16 AAA team but rebounded to finish round robin play at 2-2.
In the quarterfinals, the Warriors knocked off the San Diego Jr. Gulls U16 AAA team 6-0 before beating the San Jose Jr. Sharks U18 AAA team 3-1 to advance to the final.
In the AAA division, the Seafair Islanders got a five-point performance from forward Aaron Merrick as they knocked off the Arapahoe Warriors U18 AA team from Colorado 7-0 in the AAA final.
The Islanders went 7-0 in the tournament and had the AAA division’s top four point-getters. Mitchell Smith led the way with 20 points, Kamesh Goundar had 18, Sam Chichak had 16 and Merrick had 15.
The AA/B division was broken into two groups with the Kerry Park Islanders winning the Silver group with a 3-2 finals victory over the Alaska Allstars U16 AA team and the Campbell River Tyees winning the Gold group with a 6-3 victory in the finals over the Langley Eagles A2 team.
