The Peewee A2 team had extra reason to celebrate over the holidays. The team played in the Aldergrove Winter Tournament and defeated Semiahmoo in the finals to take home the championship.
The team’s road to the final game was a long one. They won the first round robin game against Victoria but followed that up with back-to-back losses against Port Moody and Semiahmoo. The boys squeaked in to the elimination round because of goal differential, and beat tourney hosts Aldergrove to set up the rematch against Semiahmoo in the finals.
The championship game turned out to be a nail biter and went to overtime tied 1-1. Neither team was able to find the back of the net and it seemed destined to go to five minutes of 4-on-4, but with six seconds left BWC threw the puck on net and winger Kellan Anderson was on the doorstep to score on the rebound.
The tournament was made up of mostly tier 2 teams, which head coach Aldo Bruno said was a welcome change of pace from the stiff competition the club usually faces in tier 1.
“It was a good confidence booster for the kids,” he said. “The kids we played against were all skilled, but the kids had a bit more time to make decisions than they usually do.”
Now the team is hoping they can build off that momentum as they gear up for the playoffs. They finished the regular season last weekend and have registered for a tournament in Phoenix in mid-February. |
