The Midget A team started the new year on a high note with a 5-4 win over first-place Richmond to halt its biggest losing skid of the season at five games.
“It was a really big win for our team,” said head coach Terry Lawrence. “We’ve been in a funk and needed a good effort to stop the downslide. Hopefully it will turn things around for us. We got excellent goaltending, and I really couldn’t have asked for a better effort.”
The team entered the season with a roster made up of mostly first year players, and the inexperience has been evident all season. The win against Richmond was only the team’s third victory of the season and has them hovering just above last-place Burnaby Minor thanks in large part to its ability to pick up sportsmanship points in 13 of 16 games. But Lawrence likes what he’s seeing out of his club right now and thinks they might be peaking at just the right time.
He singled out captain Naim Bardi as someone whose grit and determination has been infectious, while defenseman Gregory Iannaconi got credit for being the team’s most consistent player all season.
The team will finish off its regular season against Port Coquitlam and hope to get some players back from injury for what Lawrence hopes will be a deep playoff run. |
