The Ridge Meadows Midget C7 Sunnyvale team won the Midget C division at the Fourth Annual Canuck Place Charity Hockey Tournament.
The C7s went 2-0-1 in round robin play to finish at the top of Pool A.
In the final against the Richmond C4 team, Bantam call-up Liam Godfrey scored with eight minutes to go in the third to put Sunnyvale up, 4-3.
They’d hang on to win by that 4-3 score.
“Their best game was the final game,” said team co-manager Sue Roberts.
The tournament win was not expected of Sunnyvale as at the Christmas break, the team was just over .500 with a record of 8-7-7.
“It was kind of a surprise,” said Roberts who said the players were ecstatic after the win. The Ridge Meadows Midget A1 Rustlers went 2-0-1 in round robin play in the AAA division at the 29th Annual Richmond International Midget Tournament but it wasn’t enough to get them into the playoff round. In the consolation round, they beat the Cloverdale A1 Colts 11-5. Forward Jackson Hewitt led the team in scoring with nine points, seven of them goals. The Rustlers Midget A2 team played in the AA/B division at the tournament going 3-1 in round robin play but losing in the Gold Flite quarterfinals 5-2 to the Cloverdale A2 Colts. Chris Kaplanchuk led the team in scoring with eight points. The Rustlers Midget A3 team went 0-4 at the Herb House Midget Tournament hosted by New Westminster Minor Hockey and finished out of the playoff round. |
