The Bantam A1 team wanted a stronger start, and they got it last week with a convincing 5-1 victory over Vancouver A1.
“It was exactly what we were looking for,” said head coach Ryan Weber after the game. “We’ve played a lot of hockey over the past few weeks, but we had the best first period we could.”
The Thunderbirds came out charging and spent the first five minutes in Vancouver’s end. By the time the Spirit had time to catch a breath, they were down 2-0.
The Thunderbirds started the game short on natural defencemen, so the coaching staff opted to move forward Josh Murphy to the blueline to balance out the roster.
“He’s one of the most athletic forwards and very transferable,” Weber said. “He did good, I thought he moved the puck well and he had a couple shots from the point.”
The win put the Thunderbirds briefly over .500, but fell back down to par last Monday with a loss to Langley. Two of the team’s final three games are against teams ahead of them in the standings, and if they manage to win all three, they still have a shot at finishing first. |
