The Midget A2 team is hitting its stride at just the right time. The club picked up two huge wins last week with a 4-2 victory over Langley A3 and a 6-2 win over Sunshine Coast. Following the Sunshine Coast victory, head coach Tim Roux was giving all the credit to his tender, Akash Sidhu.
“We got some outstanding goaltending from Akash, he kept us in the game,” Roux said. “It was 1-1 to start the third, and then the floodgates opened.”
The recent offensive outpouring has come since the coaching staff has tinkered with the lines in an effort to balance out the scoring. Originally, the team put its most powerful offensive weapons in one basket, but found that some teams were able to match lines and neutralize the threat they posed. Roux moved winger Danny Heath to centre and has since seen a ripple effect go through the team.
“We are seeing some consistency, but more than that, the kids are buying into the system. We’re a team that doesn’t have any real natural goal scorers, so to score five goals in one period shows that the hard work is definitely paying off.”
The wins put the team in seventh place in Tier 4, but the pack is so tight the club is only two wins outside of second place.
The team has a chance to build on its newfound momentum when they play in the Herb House Midget Tournament, which runs Dec. 27 to 30 in New Westminster. It’s a tournament their coach is very familiar with.
“I remember playing in it when I was in Midget,” Roux chuckled. |
