Going into the game, the stats said it wouldn’t be close, but still no one expected a final score quite like this. The last place Kootenay Ice traveled to the Burnaby Winter Club for their Week 19 series against the Vancouver North West Giants with a league worst record of 2-28-2. The team had also allowed a league worst 172 goals against. The Giants were 25-3-4 and sat in top spot in the league. In the first game it was no contest: Giants 18, Ice 0. The Giants followed up that performance with a 7-1 win in the second game. Giants coach Jon Calvano says that luck had a huge role in the 18-0 victory. “It was that moment where everything went right.” Elsewhere in the league the South Island Thunderbirds widened their lead over the Valley West Hawks for the last playoff spot. After Week 19 of play, the sixth place Thunderbirds now have a six-point lead over the Hawks and the Vancouver North East Chiefs for the last playoff spot. After week 19 of play this is how the playoff picture stands. The Giants sit in first with 58 points, the Greater Vancouver Canadians are second with 52 points, the Okanagan Rockets sit in third with 46 points, the Cariboo Cougars are in fourth with 45 points, the Fraser Valley Bruins are in fifth with 43 points and the Thunderbirds are in sixth with 35 points. The top two teams get a first round playoff bye. The regular season wraps up March 1 with five games on the schedule.
South Island’s Myron has huge month South Island Thunderbirds forward Wesley Myron is the BC MML player of the month for January. Myron collected eight goals and eight assists in nine games to help his team to a 5-3-1 record. “Wesley was made an assistant captain at the start of January and has responded with great leadership on and off the ice,” Thunderbirds coach Rob Milliken told bchockey.net. “Coming back from a rib injury that kept him out of action in December, he was the leading scorer for our team in January.”
All-Star Game on the horizon The rosters for the 2009 All-Star Game have been announced.
League scoring leader Ryan Nugent Hopkins from the Giants headlines the roster for Team White while the Cariboo Cougars Brett Bulmer leads the way for Team Blue.
The All-Star Game is Feb. 20 at North Delta’s Sungod Arena. The game will be broadcast live to those living in Delta on Delta Cable as well as streamed live on the BC Hockey website and sportswave.ca. The puck drop is 7 p.m.
