Team Canucks Male U17 BC Cup Champions

Team Canucks captured the prestigious Male U17 BC Cup defeating Team Leafs 2-1. The Male U17 BC Cup was held at the Sunwave Centre in Salmon Arm, BC from April 29 – May 3, 2009. The top 120 Male Under 17 players were invited to attend with the top 46 being selected to the Male Provincial Development Camp in July. BC Hockey will announce the players selected to Provincial Development camp in the coming weeks. A statistical package for the event can be viewed on the BC Hockey website under the Male U17 section.

The Championship game opened with thunderous hits and aggressive play. At the 10 minute mark of the first period Brandon Formosa (Mission, BC) scored to give the Leafs the early 1-0 lead. After a scoreless second period the Canucks tied the game at one (1) with a marker by Brock Balson (Kamloops, BC) at the 16 minute mark. With seven (7) minutes to play in the game the Canuck’s Tyler Wootherspoon (Surrey, BC) scored to give his team the 2-1 lead. The Leafs pressured late, but were unable to beat the Canucks net minder.

The BC Hockey Male Under 17 High Performance Program is an introduction to International High Performance Hockey which involves a series of short term camps and competitions just as our national teams are exposed to it at a higher level. In addition, the Under 17 program is a pre-cursor to the well-established Hockey Canada Program of Excellence, consisting Canada’s Under 18, World Junior and Men’s National Teams.
