| Winning always looks good |

BY ANDREW CHONG
By now, nearly everyone has weighed in on the Canucks new jerseys.
Some people hate them, many people are just okay with them, and a rare few really do like them.
Perhaps most fans’ opinions on the jerseys are the same as most fans’ opinions on the team’s defensive style of play: “when it comes right down to it, we don’t really care what you do – just win.”
One thing is for sure; the jerseys will look pretty good if Markus Naslund raises the Stanley Cup wearing one.
And if Naslund has even a modest resurgence this season, who knows what the Canucks could do with their solid D, their superb goalie, and their Swedish twins.
Here’s hoping the Canucks playoff run is far more climactic than their jersey unveiling.
A NEW “LUUUU”
Team Canada’s 6-1 win in Game 8 of the Super Series in Vancouver was an outright display of B.C.’s best young talent.
New Westminster’s Kyle Turris had two goals, Burnaby’s Karl Alzner had a goal and an assist, Port Coquitlam’s Zach Hamill had two assists, and Surrey’s Colton Gillies had a goal assisted by Vancouver’s Milan Lucic.
It was awesome to hear chants of “Luuuu” echoing throughout General Motors Place whenever Lucic handled the puck or hit somebody. By the way, the “Luuuu” chants aren’t to be confused with similar chants inspired by Roberto Luongo or ex-B.C. Lions kicker Lui Passaglia.
It was also pretty heart-warming to see Turris’ smiling face up on the $5 million scoreboard after scoring his first of the night.
The crowd erupted at the announcement of his name, a large handful of which were his friends and family from the Lower Mainland.
We’ve got exclusive photos and lots of reaction from the big night on our Super Series page.
STEELERS STELLAR
Hats off to Richmond, B.C.’s Pacific Steelers U-18 team for making history at the prestigious North American Hockey Academy Labour Day Tournament this month.
The Steelers, coached by North Vancouver resident Billy Coupland, faced off against the top U-19 AAA teams from around the continent and became the first U-18 AAA team to reach the championship final.
In one of the closest second place finishes imaginable, the Steelers took their top-ranked opponents from Detroit to the 18th shooter of a sudden death shootout to break a 0-0 deadlock. Check back next issue when we feature the Steelers in our female hockey section.
YOUR TEAM IN HOCKEY NOW
Our new local hockey reports are off the ground and running with an 11-page section debuting in this issue.
The sky’s the limit in terms of where this section can go, as we hope to work with minor hockey associations province-wide in delivering in-depth and consistent minor hockey coverage.
Enjoy the new coverage and we look forward to an amazing season and a great partnership with minor hockey people from all over B.C.
Give us a call at the office for details and have a great start to the season.
