Victoria, B.C. – Wacey Hamilton of the Medicine Hat Tigers scored what turned out to be the game winner to lead Team WHL to a 2-1 triumph over Russia in Game 5 of the 2009 SUBWAY® Super Series on Wednesday night in Victoria, B.C. Spokane Chiefs’ forward Levko Koper also scored for Team WHL, breaking a scoreless tie a minute into the third period. Seattle Thunderbirds’ netminder Calvin Pickard turned aside 19 of 20 shots he faced to preserve the victory. Pickard joins his older brother, Chet, in posting victories in the annual series versus Russia. Chet, who played for the Tri-City Americans, posted a shutout in a 5-0 Team WHL win over Russia in last year’s event. Kirill Petrov notched his third goal of the SUBWAY® Super Series for the Russians, ending Pickard’s shutout bid with just 33 seconds remaining in the third frame. Igor Bobkov turned in a 40-save effort in a losing cause for the Russians, who fall to 0-5 through five games of the 2009 SUBWAY® Super Series. The series wraps up on Thursday, November 26th, with Team WHL hosting Russia in Kelowna, B.C.
